Destinations >> Coastal Lowlands :> Coastal Lowlands - Hue Hue is the capital city of Thua Thien Hue province in the central of Vietnam. It was the imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802 -1945), the final feudal regime of Vietnam. For 400 years, Hue has become the most valued national treasure in terms of history and heritage. And in 1993, the UNESCO recognized the architectural ensemble of Hue as a World Cultural Heritage. :> The Citadel The Citadel is located on the Northern bank of Perfume River. The complex faces southeast, taking Ngu Binh (Royal Screen Mountain) as a natural screen. Two islets in the Perfume River, Ta Thanh Long (Left Green Dragon) and Huu Bach Ho (Right White Tiger) play the role of sentinels for the Citadel. The construction started in 1805 under the reign of Emperor Gia Long and completed in 1832 under the reign of Emperor Ming Mang. Hue Citadel is surrounded by a 2.5 kilometers long wall and a wide moat. Access to the Citadel is by way of ten fortified gates, each of which is reached by a low, slightly arched stone bridge across the moat. The citadel is with an area of 500 hectares and a system of three circles of ramparts, namely from outside to inside: Capital Citadel, Royal Citadel and Forbidden Capital. :> Royal Tombs Each Royal Tomb reflects the personality of the ruler. The most majestic is that of Emperor Minh Mang. Planned by the Emperor and built shortly after his death, it is opulent and exotic, and laid out in formal Chinese style. The tomb is a typical architectural compound comprising 40 buildings and structures which includes palaces, temples, pavilions and other buildings. The complex was constructed between 1840 and 1843, located on the northern bank of the Perfume River, 12 kilometers from Hue. The tomb of Tu Duc, the ‘poet Emperor’, is set in an elegant garden with a magnificent lake and pavilion complex. The simplest of the actual tomb (a monument – he was buried elsewhere to thwart grave robbers) is at odds with the lavish opulence of his reign. In complete contrast to Emperor Tu Duc’s stylish creation, the tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh is an unprepossessing concrete construction. Its interest lies in the uneasy combination of Vietnamese and European features, and the use of fragments of ceramics and glass for decoration. :> Garden Houses – A Unique Feature of Hue The houses are traditional, privately owned, and set in attractive formal gardens. Some have connections with the old Royal Imperial Court. Hue traditional architecture has long had close associations with the natural environment. The garden houses reflect this association. Each is highly individual - house and garden, people and scenery, plants, clouds and water co-exist and blend with each other in a harmonious context. The narrow streets and abundant flora give the garden house area a country village feeling.
