Destinations >> Mekong River Delta :> Mekong River Delta - My Tho My Tho is a delightful town in the Mekong Delta, situated 70 kilometers southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. The Upper Mekong River (Song Tien) dissects the region into myriad creeks and canals which are inhabited by different ethnic groups such as the Kinh, the Chinese, the Cham and the Khmer. My Tho shares the same climate to other provinces in the Mekong Delta with two distinct seasons: the dry and the rainy season. The rainy season lasts from May to October and the dry season from November to April. The average annual temperature is 27°C and the humidity is quite high due to the presence of the many rivers. From My Tho, you can take a number of short boat trips to various islands and floating markets in the surrounding areas. It is also a good place to catch the overnight long boats to Chau Doc or Long Xuyen. Visiting My Tho, you can spend hours in a café simply watching life goes by, or on the river, cruising the day away. The experience in My Tho is enhanced by the extremely quite streets even in the day time. A quiet evening in My Tho can be spent on your veranda watching the sunset over the river. :> Con Phung Island Con Phung is also known as the island of the Coconut monk named after a monk, Ong Dao Dua, who established a bizarre open-air sanctuary on this island for his followers shortly after the end of the World War II. You can reach Con Phung Island by boat from My Tho which takes about half an hour. ;> Snake Farm Snake farm is around 10 kilometers from town at Dong Tam. In here, snakes are raised for the strong healing powers of their flesh and gall. :> Vinh Trang Pagoda Built in 1849, the pagoda displays a mixture of Chinese, Vietnamese and colonial architecture. It is now a beautiful place with no signs of the touristy stuff. The pagoda consists of five buildings, two ornamental yards and 178 pillars. :> My Tho Church A solid pastel-yellow building built almost a century ago. The stone plaques set in the church walls express "merci" and "cam on" to Fatima and other figures. Today two priests, two sisters and several assistants minister to much of My Tho's 7,000 Catholics. :> Central Market Central market in My Tho prawls over a large area from Le Loi Boulevard down to the river. The streets are filled with stalls selling everything from fresh food and bulk tobacco to boat propellers. The river is the best spot to observe life in My Tho.
